Last school year I realized there were so many broken and outdated toys and games. It was no surprise why my students were not playing with any of the items in the box. I allowed students to play on their computers as a fun Friday choice, but I really disliked the way they all just put on their headphones and zoned out. I missed having students play a \"good ol' fashioned\" game. My students were losing the opportunity to communicate through friendly play. This is where I had the idea to refresh the box and get rid of things and add some new games and activities. Board games and new books quickly added up. I originally thought to seek out board games at thrift stores and yard sales. But I came up short and underwhelmed. \r\n Creating this project on Donor's Choose was the best thing I did. I was able to purchase brand new items (that were guaranteed to have all their pieces). And I was able to choose items that my students would actually want to engage with. I choose some classics, like Connect 4, and Guess Who. It was been so fulfilling to watch the kids play and enjoy each other's company. The most surprising item I purchased was Play Doh. I wasn't sure if 4th graders were still interested in playing with Play Doh, but they definitely still do. Many of these students are returning to me from last year, and they were so excited to walk in and see a piece of new furniture that they would be able to use. \r\n\r\nIt also allowed for me to use my classroom budget on new classroom sets of novels instead of buying pencils, laminating sheets, and markers. You allowed me to stretch my budget and get some extra things instead of just stocking the basics.\r\n\r\nMy students use the couch during our stop and read Fridays. During this time they sit and silent read for 30 minutes. It is the biggest privilege to get to sit on the couch with your friends as you read.
