Because of your generosity, you have touched the lives of many students, who may not have had an interest in reading before your gift. You have provided inspiration, adoration, and many laughs. \r\n\r\n Our classroom is one of English Learners, who are trying to become fluent in the language. One of the pillars of education, and a great part of learning a new language is reading often in that language. By gifting us these books, you opened up an interest for many students in reading. By reading a book by someone who speaks the same native language as them, but is also fluent in English, they are inspired to continue on their journey. \r\n\r\n Students are able to connect with the traditions, and stories in this book, and are able to strengthen their English while doing so. We were able to do a small project where students read the first chapter, which described the main character's home and other places she had lived. She expressed her feelings about her home and her desires for her future. Students then used their critical reading and listening skills to draw the home from the description that they read. They had to rely on their listening skills in English to complete the project. Alongside their drawings, they also drew a picture of their house, and wrote about what home means to them. \r\n\r\n So, your gift was not simply a set of books. It was a gift of connection, and skill strengthening in their reading, listening, and writing skills in a new language.\r\n\r\nWe sincerely appreciate your generosity.","fullyFundedDate":1764598439227,"projectUrl":"project/the-house-on-mango-street/9833694/","projectTitle":"The House on Mango Street","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Andrus","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4076042_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1479419950824","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4076042"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_75356","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1165,"numTeachers":49,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":11,"percentWhite":12,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":70,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"23.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":74.0,"schoolId":75356,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Diamond Valley Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Diamond Valley Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/hemet-unified-school-district/diamond-valley-middle-school/75356"}
