Students' faces lit up as we unboxed all of our new books, and we dove right into reading. \"Round is a Tortilla - A Book of Shapes\" by Roseanne Greenfield Thong paired perfectly with our shapes unit. Students enjoyed pointing out the shapes of huevos, sandía, and paletas both in the book and in our dramatic play area. \r\n\r\nIn our class, we have many emergent communicators who are multilingual learners. During our literacy center, we spend time getting to know the different parts of a book and how to treat it well before going on a \"picture walk\". Books written with vocabulary in students' home language helps support new linguistic connections and translanguaging. Furthermore, having a library full of books that represent our students, their families, and their communities helps build a sense of belonging in our classroom. For that, I can't thank you enough.","fullyFundedDate":1790344950505,"projectUrl":"project/diverse-library-for-little-learners/10692511/","projectTitle":"Diverse Library for Little Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Amelia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6268547"},{"teacherId":2372988,"projectId":10440131,"letterContent":"The new seating options we received are a big hit! Every student that walked into the room wanted to immediately try sitting in every chair. The soft chairs that rock are a favorite already and the giant bean bag is a really great product because it holds its shape much better than the bean bag chair we already had. The bouncy chairs are also very comfortable and students can \"wiggle while they work\"! \r\n\r\nLuckily the students come to my room in small groups, so there will be minimal \"fighting\" over the beautiful new seating. We also put the lap desks to work right away. The students are expressing their gratitude for being able to sit in a comfy chair and still get their work done. \r\n\r\nThank you again for your generous donations. The students love using dry erase markers, so we go through those quickly. One of our warm-up routines is a number of the day. Students do a few activities with that number, for instance writing it in expanded form. They were also thrilled to see the new white board erasers since previously we inherited socks, yes socks, to use as erasers. Even though they were \"new socks\", we all cringed a bit at using them!\r\n\r\nThe students are also latching on to some of the new seating. There are a few that automatically gravitate toward the floor chairs where they can work more comfortably than a desk chair (which they sit in all day in class). The foam filling was used to repair the bean bag chair I have had for a few years. It was limp and lifeless, and now...it's the centerpiece of our \"calm space\" where students can take a five minute break if they are overwhelmed or having big feelings. All the items that we received from this grant, from pencils to tissues, are being used daily in our classroom. They quickly made it part of our daily routine, and it has helped create a welcoming learning environment.\r\n\r\nAs we continue our classroom lessons, the carpet will be used every day for circle time, language activities, social-emotional learning, and collaborative group work. Purchasing more dry erase markers for the students means that we don't have to ration them out for the remainder of the year. The students work on a \"Number of the Day\" three to four times a week, which uses a dry erase marker. It supports their understanding of place value and the magnitude of numbers. We have number talks and learn how to estimate. It's such an important foundation to number sense! We also use the markers and dry erase boards for brainstorming ideas, scratch paper and more. For whatever reason, everything is more fun for them with dry erase markers!\r\n\r\nWe also received correction tape that students love to use during writing assignments. Mistakes become not only an opportunity for learning, but also a way to use that fun little gadget! Another important part of this Donors Choose package were the Clorox wipes. The students come into our space daily from different classrooms which brings germs from multiple sources. I like to wipe down the surfaces daily to keep it sanitary, especially during cold and flu season.\r\n\r\nThank you for supporting our classroom. The moment we opened them, my students were smiling, reaching, and eager to explore. A few of them immediately started sorting and building, while others just enjoyed feeling and examining the different textures. Their excitement was instant and genuine.\r\n\r\nWe've been using the manipulatives during small group time to support communication, fine motor skills, and social interaction. I've already seen students more engaged and willing to participate, especially those who are usually hesitant. One student who typically struggles to stay focused spent an entire session building and taking turns with a peer — such a big win!\r\n\r\nNext, we'll continue using the materials in structured centers and guided activities to build independence and strengthen skills.
