Students are using the fidgets, books, and weighted stuffed animals to pause, reset, and reflect when they feel overwhelmed. One especially powerful moment came when a student independently chose to sit in the area with a weighted animal after a disagreement during playtime. After a few minutes, they returned and used words we've been practicing to express their feelings and resolve the conflict. We've also been using the books during group discussions to explore emotions, helping students make connections between the characters' experiences and their own.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials were first introduced, the excitement was immediate. Students were eager to explore each item and we took time together to model how to use them safely and respectfully. Many were especially drawn to the sensory aspects of the fidgets and the comfort of the weighted stuffed animals. What stood out most was how naturally students began to understand the purpose of the spaceānot just as a place to play, but as a tool to help them feel better and regain control of their emotions.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are continuing to build on these skills by incorporating more structured lessons around emotional recognition and coping strategies. I also plan to introduce more peer-sharing opportunities where students can talk about what helps them calm down. These next steps will deepen their understanding of self-regulation and strengthen our classroom community.","fullyFundedDate":1773666533755,"projectUrl":"project/building-calm-and-confidence-in-our-tran/10137060/","projectTitle":"Building Calm and Confidence in Our Transitional Kindergarten Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Frederick","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1961182"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_7754","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":421,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":87,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":15,"percentWhite":4,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":73,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":1,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"16.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":62.8,"schoolId":7754,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Washington Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Washington Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/hawthorne-school-district/washington-school/7754"}
