Our school traditionally hosts a March Madness style book contest across our campus. We begin with sixteen book titles. Each class votes between two books, and the more popular title moves on to the next bracket. Then we proceed to select the top eight, top four, top two, until we get the winning book of the year. Out of all the books, \"Don't Trust Fish!\" earned the top spot this year. Having these actual books and a new book display in the classroom took the engagement level up a notch. While we listened/watched these stories online, I also shared the actual books and zoomed in on the words for my students to better see the words to read! Afterwards, we voted, and it was fun! In my class, students got in a line to vote. But do they really understand what those numbers mean? In second grade, telling time on a traditional analog clock is introduced. For this reason, I wanted to gift each and every student in my class their own watch to proudly wear! Your generous support made this dream a reality! However, this gift provided more learning opportunities! Students learned how to set their own watches. The watches were set to noon, and then at noon, the clocks came alive! Next, was a fun challenge of watching the students put the watches on their wrists! Many persevered, or asked a friend to help. Such a proud moment for them! My students have been diving headfirst into our new hands-on center every single day. We are currently using the squeeze-and-sort sets to build up those tiny hand muscles through 'The Great Treasure Hunt.' I hide small beads inside Play-Doh, and the children use their 'pincer grasp' and/or tongs to dig them out. This playful challenge is doing wonders for their endurance; I've already noticed several students holding their crayons with much more control and confidence during our handwriting book time. Beyond the tactile tools, our new board books have become the stars of our classroom library. Because these books are so durable and easy to grip, my students can independently flip the pages without frustration, practicing the \"left-to-right\" mechanics of reading while enjoying the vibrant stories.\r\n\r\nThe day the boxes arrived was like Christmas coming early for our classroom! When I first pulled out the magic boards, practice life-skill mats, and the new stack of books, the room erupted in cheers. Seeing their eyes light up at tools that feel like toys—but work like exercise—was a highlight of our year. They weren't just excited for new things; they were excited to show me how 'grown-up' they felt handling their very own books.\r\n\r\nThe journey doesn't stop here. Now that we have bolstered our foundational strength, our next step is to transition these skills into formal letter formation. We will be using our strengthened hand muscles to navigate tactile sand trays, and begin drawing large-scale letters on vertical surfaces.
