Part of our program is to teach life skills for our adults with disabilities, and cooking is a major part of that. Prior to this year, we were limited in what we could teach as we had to work with microwaves and other portable appliances. But at the end of last school year, our school was donated 5 ovens and stove tops.\r\n\r\nFor the first few months of the year, we could not use them because we didn't have the proper cooking supplies in the form of pots, pans, baking sheets and utensils. Because of this grant, not only have we been cooking more but planned, prepared and made and entire Thanksgiving Feast for 250 people here on our campus. These areas help students feel safe and supported, allowing them to manage their emotions and focus on learning. Teachers have seen that when students use these calm corners, they can get back to their work faster and feel more confident.\r\n\r\nThe sensory tools also help students express their feelings and communicate better. Younger students especially like using the feelings chart, which helps them name their emotions and pick strategies to calm down. This not only reduces their frustration but also helps them learn healthy ways to cope and build emotional strength. Older students even help show others how to use these tools, allowing them to practice leadership skills while assisting their classmates.\r\n\r\nOverall, sensory-friendly spaces have created a culture of wellness and support in our school. Students now have effective ways to handle stress and other needs, which improves the learning environment for everyone. These efforts continue to strengthen connections within our community and empower students to take care of their well-being.","fullyFundedDate":1748631844485,"projectUrl":"project/calm-corners-for-all/9360545/","projectTitle":"Calm Corners for All","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Jaramillo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9693235"},{"teacherId":1937149,"projectId":9275217,"letterContent":"Every year I have to purchase sensory supplies for my students. When you have students with extreme sensory needs, it often takes a kit of things for every student in order to help them feel comfortable in their own skin. Sensory items can help students access the world around them, show the skills they have that can sometimes be hidden and even prevent an individual from becoming upset. It takes an army of supplies sometimes just to fit the unique needs of a classroom of 12 students.\r\n\r\nThank you for assisting me in providing the sensory input my students need in order to thrive.
