Every Friday for fun. Friday we go out and play soccer with the goals, throw the football around, and play Foursquare. The kids love the variety and appreciate that the equipment is new and belongs to us. \r\n\r\nWhen my class first saw all of the colorful FourSquare balls, the large kickball the volleyball and the soccer goals jumped up screaming with excitement that they get to enjoy brand new equipment. \r\n\r\nWith your generous donation, my class has an opportunity to learn new games, hone their skills in soccer and football, and learn good sportsmanship. \r\n\r\nMy school has opportunities for 5th graders to join our school sports teams for basketball and volleyball. The equipment that you provided us gives my class a head start on practicing their skills and also encourages kids to try a new sport.\r\n\r\nAlso, my teammates at my school are thrilled that I no longer have to borrow their materials.","fullyFundedDate":1749941433467,"projectUrl":"project/sports-equipment/9318035/","projectTitle":"Sports Equipment","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Long","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10013257_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1750087238463","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10013257"},{"teacherId":627459,"projectId":9226822,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generous donation of funds used to purchase pictures books! Picture books are the perfect tool for classroom read-alouds where a class can participate in a common shared experience guided by their teacher. The stories inside beautifully written and illustrated picture books provide the backdrop for class discussions and teachable moments. Well crafted read-alouds delivered by teachers require rich literature to be used as the vehicle for inspiring instruction.\r\n\r\nResearch shows that our young students are entering school with far smaller vocabularies and much less exposure to text than previous generations of students entering school. The responsibility then rests on the classroom teacher to mitigate these deficits, so the young student doesn't suffer the consequences. Oral language development is a key indicator of future reading success... so read-alouds by skilled teachers are a critical piece of literacy instruction. The picture books you donated will serve as both windows and mirrors for students - seeing themselves in books as well as looking into worlds different than their own. So many factors contribute to growing a reader, and for some students the growth in literacy is more challenging. When building a solid foundation of skills in literacy it's critical to practice those skills when reading text that is controlled and decodable - which means text that practices specific spelling patterns while controlling the amount and types of other words. This allows the reader to focus on specific skills and spelling patterns without the distraction of more difficult words.\r\n\r\nMost text used for this purpose is designed for the younger reader. The text has simple themes and pictures in a very simple format. The books you donated are tailored for older students, designed in a chapter book format. This allows the older readers to practice critical skills with confidence while reading alongside their peers in upper elementary classrooms. Students participated in this novel study over the last two months, and all I can say is, \"WOW\"! \r\n\r\nStudents participated in group discussions, partner work, writing activities, and reading comprehension activities as we read and worked through this novel. Students were actively engaged with the story and we had SUCH great discussions about the story's main events, themes, conflicts/resolutions, and so much more. \r\n\r\nThis is the final novel of 5th grade for us and I consider it a send off to 6th grade. In the story, the main character focuses on how she wants to do something meaningful and important with her life; how she wants to make a difference.
