During small-group instruction, students have been using the hands-on tiles to spell CVC words. We also review sight and high-frequency words using flashcards and practice them through choral reading. Students then use those words to spell with the tiles.\r\n\r\nRepeated practice with these words is helping students recognize sight words while also learning how to encode by physically manipulating the tiles to build CVC words. In addition, I have been using sentence strips so students can touch each word and read it aloud. This strategy helps them track the words while reading and builds their confidence as readers.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for my students are to continue building their vocabulary by learning and recognizing at least 100 sight words and being able to spell them before moving on to mastering additional words. Students will also begin learning syllabification and will work with two- and three-syllable words. In addition, they will apply the words they have learned by writing simple sentences.
