The students were so excited when they saw all the boxes for the garden. They wanted to start right away but I had to tell them we need to have a plan first. I took this opportunity to build our classroom and school community. First, we talk about where to place the garden so everyone can enjoy it. Then we discuss what does a garden need to be successful. As a class we research what a garden needs and what type of vegetables grow in what seasons. The students learned learn that certain plants grow at different seasons. Since it was winter time we planted Kale, carrots, and a variety of lettuces. The kids where so excited when they saw the vegetables growing. They wanted to pick it right away!!! This lead to us researching how long certain vegetables need to grow before harvesting them. Once the vegetables where ready to harvest, we had a harvest party and invited the parents who help with the garden. \r\n I took garden project to help enhance their core academics by making it more meaningful and engaging. In science they learned the parts of the plants and how some insects can be beneficial while others are not helpful. So the class had to research which plants and animals have symbiotic relationship. Besides the vegetables we needed to plant some flowers that will attract beneficial insects to our garden to help pollinating the plants, controlling the harmful pests, and improving the soil health. Since After the first harvest, we were leaning the lifecycle of the butterfly and learned that butterflies are beneficial insects to a garden. When the butterflies hatch we release them to our garden. We can't wait for the next harvest party!!!","fullyFundedDate":1669769848656,"projectUrl":"project/jolly-green-gardeners/6650118/","projectTitle":"Jolly Green Gardeners","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. McKerr","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp58797_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1664508773828","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/58797"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_7716","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":351,"numTeachers":22,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":19,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":80,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"16.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":72.6,"schoolId":7716,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Charles W Bursch Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Charles W Bursch Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/compton-unified-school-district/charles-w-bursch-elementary-school/7716"}
