Because of donors like you, my students now have access to such a great resource, Scholastic Magazine! The Scholastic issues help my class grow as confident readers and thinkers. Not all students love to read, either to learn and/or for enjoyment. But I truly believe that the magazine allows for reading practice while exposing students to current events, which in turn does help with that. The articles and topics are all age appropriate, making it appealing for the students. I teach in a Dual Language (English/Spanish) classroom and the magazine's online component has every issue available in both English and Spanish. In addition to reading practice in both languages, the online \"skill builder\" activities are phenomenal! They have a focus on comprehension and vocabulary which is so important. \r\n Reading in our classroom is an active and joyful experience. Students participate in small-group reading, partner reading, and independent reading time. During these moments, they practice learning new vocabulary, reading for fluency, and developing their comprehension skills. We are also able to use the magazine for writing practice. Each magazine has an article that can be used for opinion writing response. They are able to respond and complete an opinion piece on topics that are relevant to them, such as, \"Should students be required to wear uniforms? or Should cell phones be allowed at school?\". I have also used these to have structured debates in the classroom, which the students love!\r\n My entire class has benefited from this subscription. I have seen students who were once hesitant to read aloud now volunteering to share with the class. Others love discussing the stories and making connections to their own lives.
