They immediately began searching for the shades that looked most like their own skin. One student held up a pencil and said with a big smile, \"This one looks just like me!\"\r\n\r\nWe've been using the pencils in our self-portrait art project. Before, students often had to use just peach or brown crayons, which didn't feel right to many of them. Now, they mix and choose from a variety of skin-tone colors to make portraits that look like themselves and their friends. It's been a powerful and joyful way to talk about the beauty of our different skin tones.\r\n\r\nWhen the pencils first arrived, the whole class clapped and cheered — it was such a happy moment. These new supplies have made our art projects more meaningful and inclusive.\r\n\r\nNext, we'll use the pencils in our upcoming \"All About Me\" writing and drawing project, where students will draw their families and label each member. The variety of colors will help them represent everyone in their family with pride and accuracy.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, my students can create artwork that reflects who they are. These pencils may seem like a small addition, but in our classroom they've made a big difference in how students see themselves and one another.","fullyFundedDate":1747577135437,"projectUrl":"project/bright-beginnings-jumbo-pencils-for-cre/9350946/","projectTitle":"Bright Beginnings: Jumbo Pencils for Creative Kindergarten Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Flippo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10034053_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1747161499797","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10034053"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_72696","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":434,"numTeachers":21,"percentFrplEligible":50,"percentAsian":13,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":29,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":52,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"20.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":79.2,"schoolId":72696,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Whitmore Charter School of Art & Technical on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Whitmore Charter School of Art & Technical","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/ceres-unified-school-district/whitmore-charter-school-of-technology/72696"}
