The thermite materials, the Stuff Matters book, the small microwave, the mini-fridge, and the spectrophotometer have all become essential parts of our lab this year.\r\n\r\nMy students were amazed watching the thermite demonstration—seeing actual molten metal form as they learned about redox reactions made the concept come alive in a way no textbook ever could. The extra spectrophotometer has enabled students to analyze their data without having to come back after school: they determined the percent copper in brass, and they calculated the molarity of Blue 1 dye, giving them real experience with analytical chemistry. The microwave and mini-fridge have helped us safely handle reagents and prepare lab materials, and Stuff Matters has sparked many great conversations about the chemistry behind everyday materials. These labs have helped my students understand how molecular absorption of light can be used to find the concentration. And the little cuvette is essential to this!\r\nAlso, the colored ink has allowed me to make great reference sheets for my students. One reference they love is the colored periodic table that clearly shows the spdf organization, the locations of metals, nonmetals, and semimetals, and the group names. They use this in class every day and have helped students learn the periodic table's organization more effectively.
