Listening to books with characters that express emotions has helped my TK students connect feeling words to facial expressions and body language. This has given them the vocabulary to describe their own feelings, and they've been noticing and naming these feelings in themselves and others. My students have also learned strategies for dealing with big emotions, such as breathing exercises, using words and phrases, and asking for help from a trusted adult.\r\n\r\nAlthough my students don't yet read, they enjoy listening to books during read aloud story time. After listening to a story, students made connections to their own experiences when they had similar feelings. Many students have been looking through the books on their own and retelling the story based on the pictures on each page.\r\n\r\nReading these social emotional books to my TK students has done much more than add stories to our repertoire.
