The new literacy games have already brought so much excitement and energy to our classroom. From the moment my students saw the colorful new games, they could not wait to open them, learn how to play, and try them all. For students who spend so much of their school day working hard on skills that can sometimes be challenging for them, having an opportunity to practice those same important literacy and comprehension skills through games has been incredibly motivating. Students are learning that practicing reading does not always have to feel like another assignment or worksheet—it can be something they genuinely look forward to! It has also been fun to see which games quickly became classroom favorites. The Shopping Game, which focuses on identifying main idea, was especially popular with many of the girls, while Skatepark Rally, which allows students to practice predicting outcomes, quickly became a favorite among many of the boys. The best part is that while students feel like they are having fun and playing with their friends, they are actually getting additional practice with essential reading and comprehension skills.\r\n\r\nWe are using these resources during our Fun Fridays as a way for students to practice and reinforce the literacy skills we have been working on throughout the week. The games provide a much-needed change of pace while still keeping our time together purposeful and focused on learning. I am especially excited about the English Learner games because they will allow us to extend our learning beyond traditional reading comprehension skills. These resources will help students strengthen vocabulary, phrasing, and oral language while also supporting important language objectives in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students can hear language modeled by their peers, practice expressing their own ideas, discuss answers, read directions and questions, and build confidence using academic language in a comfortable small-group environment. These opportunities are especially valuable for students who may be hesitant to participate during whole-group instruction. A game naturally encourages conversation and interaction, giving students an authentic reason to communicate while practicing important skills.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, these resources will continue to be an important part of our literacy instruction. One of the greatest benefits of the games is that they support a variety of skills and ability levels, which means they can continue to be used as students grow and advance in their literacy knowledge. As students master one skill, I can introduce games that target increasingly challenging comprehension, vocabulary, and language skills. I can also intentionally match students with games based on the specific areas in which they need additional practice. My goal is for Fun Fridays to continue providing students with something exciting to work toward while reinforcing the idea that becoming a stronger reader takes practice and perseverance. When students are engaged, focused, and excited to learn is when they make the most growth. Thanks to your generosity, my students now have resources that make that practice feel less like work and more like fun. These games will be enjoyed by many groups of students and will continue providing meaningful literacy practice for years to come. We have had the funniest time making mini films and movies. Our students loved being creative and working together, and we were able to share many of our projects with our school community.\r\n\r\nDuring our meetings, students learned how to use a green screen to create exciting backgrounds and special effects for their scenes. They also practiced filming with a digital camera recorder, learning how to plan shots, record clips, and bring their movie ideas to life. \r\n\r\nWhen children create films, they get to share their ideas, stories, and imagination.
