The vibrating bumble bee, magic wands, and visual sensory items have been especially helpful during our \"Describe & Discover\" project, where students choose an item and practice vocabulary, categories, and sentence expansion by describing its features and how it feels or moves. When the students first saw the materials, they were thrilled—many immediately reached for the vibrating bumble bee and the colorful magic wands, and several were mesmerized by the visual sensory items. Their excitement translated into increased participation and confidence, even from students who are typically more hesitant to speak. Moving forward, we'll be incorporating these materials into structured communication tasks focusing on turn-taking, problem-solving language, and conversational skills, as well as beginning a multi-week project where students build their own \"sensory strategy toolkit\" to identify which tools help them focus and communicate best. These donated resources have truly transformed our therapy space and created meaningful opportunities for growth.","fullyFundedDate":1763666664675,"projectUrl":"project/speech-and-language-superstars/9850641/","projectTitle":"Speech and Language Superstars","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Gutierrez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10325793"},{"teacherId":8929908,"projectId":7135877,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support! This project has had a profound impact on my Spanish Ethnic Studies class as my students read The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. Through this book, my students not only improved their reading comprehension and literary analysis skills but also engaged deeply with themes of identity, culture, and community.\r\n\r\nThis book has allowed us to explore narrative voice, symbolism, and thematic analysis, all while connecting to the students' lived experiences. We delved into how the vignettes reflect the complexities of identity and belonging, sparking rich discussions about how our personal stories shape who we are. Students also learned to draw parallels between the struggles faced by the characters and their own families' histories and experiences.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is dynamic and interactive. We begin with group readings and discussions, allowing students to share their insights and interpretations. Activities such as writing their own vignettes inspired by The House on Mango Street have empowered them to express their voices creatively. This process fosters collaboration and helps them see themselves as storytellers.\r\n\r\n\r\nOne student, in particular, who previously struggled with engagement, found a personal connection to the protagonist's experiences. They shared how the book made them feel \"seen\" and inspired them to write about their neighborhood and family life. Another student was excited to share the book at home, saying, \"My mom read this with me, and we talked about her childhood in Mexico.\" Moments like these show how literature can bridge classroom learning with family and cultural connections.\r\n\r\nBy bringing The House on Mango Street into our curriculum, this project has given my students a deeper appreciation of their cultural heritage and the power of storytelling.
