Right away, I arranged the new books on my display shelf where students would be able to find them. On the first day, we read aloud from \"Who Are We\" in Farsi and English, which was the perfect introduction to our unit on families. The next day, we read \"Words to Make a Friend\" and all of the students got to practice some Japanese!\r\n\r\nI had hoped that these books would increase students' sense of belonging, and they absolutely have. When students see their home language represented in the classroom, their faces light up. They feel proud to be different and to know a language that not everyone in the class knows-- they get to be experts! \r\n\r\nWith the high-interest nonfiction I bought, my independent reading shelf is so much more enticing to students. They will sit down together to read and look at pictures of kids from around the world, sharing about themselves and learning about their classmates. This also means that when students finish their work early, they always have something fun and worthwhile to do, so I am free to work with the students who need more help.","fullyFundedDate":1730395058621,"projectUrl":"project/bilingual-books-for-english-language-lea/8887889/","projectTitle":"Bilingual Books for English Language Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Sheys","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4667214_orig.jpg?crop=960,960,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1560365701395","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4667214"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_3750","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":548,"numTeachers":23,"percentFrplEligible":45,"percentAsian":37,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":16,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":22,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"23.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":75.3,"schoolId":3750,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Ocean View Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Ocean View Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/albany-unified-school-district/ocean-view-elementary-school/3750"}
