With the new materials, students worked together as a class to read our new novel, combining research, collaboration, and problem-solving. The quality of their work — and the pride they took in it — showed just how impactful these resources have been.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, we're continuing to build on this momentum. Students have read together in small groups, analyzed the text to determine key points in a passage, provide text evidence to support their responses to thick comprehension questions, used the map to apply real world concepts to the text, and applied text to world connections when comparing events in this Narrative Non-fiction text to events happening in our society today. I was impressed by their awareness of the war in Ukraine and how they compared the attacks by rebels in the novel to attacks in the Ukrainian war today. As an extension activity for this unit, I will be reading to them the books One Plastic Bag: Isatou Ceesay and the Recycling Women of Gambia and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Picture Book Edition to provide other examples of people who have created opportunities to make a much needed change in their community. As an inspiration from these books, our students will organize a 2 week shoe drive to donate to a NonProfit organization WaterSteps where funds are used to provide Recycled Water to Disaster Relief projects here in the US and other countries.\r\n Students are also required to self-select novels to read, test, and obtain points for these books as part of their reading grade. This grant provided a wide variety of new novels for my students to select from to reach these diverse readers. \r\n I have several students who enjoy reading Realistic Fiction novels and the book, Among the Hidden has been a go to for these students! They love how it could really happen-similar to what happened in China when families were limited to 2 children for population control in the 1970's and that it is part of a series by Margaret Peterson Haddix.\r\n As you can see, the books provided by this grant has promoted multiple opportunites for my students to be inspired both in and outside the classroom not only this school year but for many years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1755626700843,"projectUrl":"project/oh-the-places-you-can-go/9416896/","projectTitle":"Oh, The Places You Can Go!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Jones","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2191539_orig.jpg?crop=503,503,x180,y319&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1657905095358","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/tabitha-jones"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_108805","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":32,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":82,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":5,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Not specified","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Weighted Average","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":86.0,"schoolId":108805,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Valley View Intermediate\tSchool Blue (Grades 5-6) on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Valley View Intermediate\tSchool Blue (Grades 5-6)","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/arkansas/valley-view-school-district/valley-view-intermediate-school-grades-5-6-/108805"}
