How do you create life long readers? You give them access to a wide variety of genres to hook them by their personal interests! Historical fiction, non-fiction, realistic fiction and many free-verse novels provide interesting stories about real events in local communities and around the world! These stories provide opportunities for research and class discussions about events such as hurricane disasters, tornado damage, and dire water conditions as a result of these catastrophies. After reading such stories, my students have organized events to collect items needed to send to these areas. My students are NOT just passive readers! Novel studies provides topics for weekly journal writing, independent research, vocabulary enrichment, and controversial questions for whole classroom debates.
