They have learned techniques such as pinching, coiling, slab building, scoring and slipping, adding texture, and glazing. One of my favorite parts has been watching their confidence grow from their first simple pieces to projects where they are now making their own creative decisions. Having the proper tools and materials available has allowed students to focus more on craftsmanship, problem-solving, and expressing their individual ideas instead of being limited by what our classroom had available.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue building on these skills with more challenging projects that combine multiple construction and surface-design techniques. When students first saw all of the new glaze colors, they were incredibly excited to start planning how they would use them on their ceramic pieces. Having so many options has allowed them to make more intentional artistic choices and truly personalize their work.\r\n\r\nWe are currently using the glazes to finish the ceramic projects students have created while learning different hand-building techniques, including pinch, coil, and slab construction. Before glazing, students learned about proper glaze application, layering, underglaze, clear glaze, and how different glaze combinations can change during firing. One of the most exciting moments has been opening the kiln after a glaze firing and seeing students discover how their pieces transformed. They love comparing the finished colors to what the glaze looked like before firing and seeing how their choices turned out.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the year, students will use these glazes on increasingly complex projects while experimenting with texture, glaze combinations, layering, and other surface-design techniques. These materials have allowed me to teach glazing as an important part of the ceramic process rather than simply having students choose from a very limited selection of colors.
