My students dove right into a portrait unit inspired by the work of Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald. The students used the new materials to explore ways to use inspiration from the artist's style they chose to create a subject of their choice. Using the paint and mixed media paper, each student created their own contemporary portrait that reflected both personal identity and artistic influence.\r\n\r\nOne moment that stood out was that quite a few of my students were apprehensive to use paint in their artwork, but many of them used paint in their portraits and were proud of what they created. The materials you provided gave my students the tools to express themselves thoughtfully and boldly, just like the artists they studied. My students were truly appreciative of having the materials readily available. While many of them are eager to buy their own supplies, financial limitations often make that difficult. Several shared that the experience felt like \"real artists.\" Knowing that people beyond our classroom believe in their creativity was a powerful source of motivation for them.\r\n\r\nNext, we're gearing up for a virtual art showcase where students will present their portrait projects.
