Having a copy for each student to read was instrumental in delivering great instruction and an impactful lesson. We paired this novel study with a series of editorial essays from many successful adults who wrote on the topic of teenagers having part time jobs. We related the grit that Mattie Ross (True Grit) showed through the novel to the authors of the articles. As a culminating project, students created a photo collage where they synthasized the information they got from True Grit, the articles, and their personal experiences. This was a wonderful project for my freshman students to recognize the grit in themselves, as well as their families and classmates. \r\n\r\nThank you.","fullyFundedDate":1735661097699,"projectUrl":"project/true-grit-novel-set/8856157/","projectTitle":"True Grit Novel Set","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Bratcher","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5171453_orig.jpg?crop=409,409,x70,y148&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1733247947905","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5171453"},{"teacherId":5171453,"projectId":8859150,"letterContent":"Thank you for this incredible donation to our classroom. Many students strive to see themselves in the characters they read about in books, and there aren't as many novels who choose the protaganist to be a teenage Indian boy. This story is impactful for many of my students who are of Native American descent as well as students of other marginalized populations. \r\n\r\nThis book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by, Sherman Alexie is about an ambitious teenager who lives on a poor reservation. He plays basketball and tries to excel in school, but his team lacks proper funding and facilities to be successful, and his school lacks qualified teachers, updated materials and supplies. The speaker in the book tells his story in the first-person narrative so we hear it with an authentic voice of a kid. This makes it very relatable to my students. \r\n\r\nMy students had the opportunity to opt in to this book club which meets during intervention/enrichment times during the day. They take the book home and we discuss it during our meetings. The conversations that have come from these discussions have been meaningful and have given some of our quieter students a voice to help express thoughts and feelings that they had previously thought were just their own. \r\n\r\nThank you for your generosity in helping to purchase this class set.
