Being organized is extremely important and learning this importance begins in kindergarten. Binders are helping my students to organize their paperwork, homework, and notices home. Students are using them daily and enjoying the organizational tool. The sentence strips have helped us color coordinate our language learning, poems, sentence frames, and stories. We have been able to use them successfully throughout our vocabulary learning for all areas of the curriculum. Having pencil sharpeners in the organized zipper pouches of the binder has encouraged more writing at home because students have sharpened pencils to use. I am a quilter myself and have friends that quilt as well. Quilting is a beautiful art form that is declining in the younger generations. I want to highlight this beautiful art form in the art classroom, who knows it may inspire someone to want to learn to sew. \r\nThe third grade classes in our district read the novel \"Sarah Plain and Tall\" each year as part of their literature curriculum. This novel gives students a glimpse into the pioneer days. This novel also illustrates how families couldn't survive on their own, families needed to work together as a larger community. These quilt kits just arrived at our school so we haven't used them yet because I want them to coincide with the novel study. We will use these quilts as a collaborative class project, showing that when we work together we can make something beautiful. I will bring in examples of my quilts that I have made throughout the years and we will look at famous quilts like those made by the famous artist Faith Ringgold. Because these quilt kits are made of actual fabric the quilts that we create will last a long time. We will be able to hang them in the classroom or library for all to admire.
