I am a quilter myself and have friends that quilt as well. Quilting is a beautiful art form that is declining in the younger generations. I want to highlight this beautiful art form in the art classroom, who knows it may inspire someone to want to learn to sew. \r\nThe third grade classes in our district read the novel \"Sarah Plain and Tall\" each year as part of their literature curriculum. This novel gives students a glimpse into the pioneer days. This novel also illustrates how families couldn't survive on their own, families needed to work together as a larger community. These quilt kits just arrived at our school so we haven't used them yet because I want them to coincide with the novel study. We will use these quilts as a collaborative class project, showing that when we work together we can make something beautiful. I will bring in examples of my quilts that I have made throughout the years and we will look at famous quilts like those made by the famous artist Faith Ringgold. Because these quilt kits are made of actual fabric the quilts that we create will last a long time. We will be able to hang them in the classroom or library for all to admire. This project called 'Light Up our imaginations\" has been so fun and rewarding for the students. I requested light boxes for the students to use for tracing activities. The students have absolutely LOVED these new tools in the art room. \r\nStudents have an assigned art project in my room each week. I may be teaching about an art element, we may be studying a famous artist, or I may be supporting reading education with a project that corresponds with the literature students are reading in their general education classroom. Because all students are allowed to work and create at their own pace in the art room, I like to have additional choice activities available for those early finishers. These light boxes have been a definite favorite amongst my students. I have several light boxes set up along the back counters of my room. Sometimes I tape images to the boards - for example when we were studying the Japanese Artist Hokusai, I taped down images of his most famous prints. Images like \"The Great Wave off Kanagawa\" or images from his series called \"36 views of Mt. Fuji\". Students were able to visit the light box center and trace these famous images, then they can color and create their own version of this famous piece. Other times I allow students to pick from image of their favorite characters, like hello kitty or minecraft. Students get to trace these beloved characters and this in turn helps the students learn the muscle movements used to create these drawings. This skill transfers when they create their own work.
