As students walked in that morning, eyes went wide and voices erupted with \"Whoa!\" and \"Is that OURS?!\" Once it was placed in the front of the room, several students immediately flopped down on the soft rug, running their hands across it like they couldn't quite believe it was real. The benches not only gave students a place to settle in together, but also offered much needed storage for tissues, hand sanitizer, and math manipulatives. It changed the energy of the room instantly; our meeting area felt like a true home base.\r\nThe most telling sign of how much students love these new materials? They don't even wait for the school day to begin. Every morning, before the bell rings, students are already curled up on the carpet or perched on the benches with an Elephant and Piggie book in hand; completely by choice. One current favorite is Waiting Is Not Easy!, and it's easy to see why. Gerald and Piggie's hilarious struggle with patience has sparked some really honest conversations during morning meetings about a feeling every one of us knows well. Watching students laugh, point at the pages, and nudge a friend to share the book is exactly the kind of reading joy that is hard to manufacture and your generosity made it happen naturally.\r\nThis cozy, welcoming reading space has set the stage for so much more learning ahead. We are currently working on a unit about different communities, and the comfort and calm of our new space has made students more willing to settle in, focus, and take risks as readers and thinkers. My students were literally SEW HAPPY. I will begin my fiber arts unit with all students next month. I can not wait to use these with my younger students. These boards will help to lay the fundamental skills needed for more advanced sewing and weaving projects. \r\n These boards also came in handy with my older students just the other day. We had a group of students who were taking a state required test. As with any testing, students finish at varying rates. As students were completing their tests they were required to stay absolutely quiet because other students were still working. These threading boards were the perfect activity. Students were able to stay occupied in a quiet way. They got the opportunity to be creative and create whatever designs they wanted. The act of threading/sewing had a calming effect after a stressful test. And because the boards are reusable students were able to keep busy the entire testing session.\r\n We were saddened that each kit didn't come with a design idea book so my older students decided that they will create designs, I will take a picture and we will create our own design idea booklet for the younger students to use. These threading boards have brought so much excitement and joy to the art room already, I know Palmcroft students will love these for many years to come. We have been able to use them successfully throughout our vocabulary learning for all areas of the curriculum. Having pencil sharpeners in the organized zipper pouches of the binder has encouraged more writing at home because students have sharpened pencils to use.
