I am choosing to utilize this during colonization/Scramble for Africa unit. The unit of colonization for my students have always been a difficult one for me to teach. Typically it's earlier in the year so the students are still learning how to be a middle schooler but also the idea of colonization is a difficult concept to grasp. I remember struggling to differentiate between immigration, colonization, and imperialism. \r\n\r\nFor the longest time I have always wished there was an online game where you could conquer the world. Specifically to gain resources that specific student \"needed\". Well, that game seems impossible to find! There were a few out there, but not always the most reliable technology-wise or simply too difficult for 12-year-olds. \r\n\r\nSo I started working on making my own board game similar, but printing and cutting everything was a NIGHTMARE. Which led me to the game of Catan. It represents so much of what I was trying to achieve to teach. It is such a fun game and really teaches the concept of colonization for the sake of settling and resources.","fullyFundedDate":1740686039073,"projectUrl":"project/wheat-built-this-city/9054696/","projectTitle":"Wheat Built This City!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Barlow","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8430362_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755279833187","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8430362"},{"teacherId":8430362,"projectId":9243807,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for providing the means to have my students read Farewell to Manzanar. What has always surprised my students is when I taught them of the Japanese internment camps. Even as I speak with other adults, it's not as common knowledge as you'd think! \r\n\r\nA big reason why I became a teacher is to make sure important history is not forgotten through generations. These middle schoolers will learn of past mistakes, choices, and events and make a better world for themselves as adults. That means looking at all of our history and analyzing why we did something, what was its impact, and can it happen again? If so, how can we as regular citizens prevent this? \r\n\r\nI have always found ways to empower my students and passed on the knowledge that they can make a big change. It has been a game changer for sure when getting students to work on their lessons independently. I had a huge increase in growth along with students being more willing to wear/utlize headphones. Students said the headphones were very comfortable, easy to use, and they loved how adjustable they were. The noise canceling helped with students being able to focus and drown out sound as needed. The best part in my opinion was the size as all students were able to use them without having to over stretch or potentially break a pair.\r\nMy class utilized the headphones mostly for when working on their MyPath but we were also able to utilze them during state testing. Having good headphones for state testing had a positive impact as well as my campus tends to not have enough for each student to have their own pair. I was able to use my own set for my class and therefore other teachers had more headphones to use. After having the headphones for some time I looked at some data and I had a lot who made growth and increased thier lessons compared to before hand. I really enjoyed seeing the students grow and learn at their own pace. These will also impact my students for years to come as they are very durable and well made.
