Your generous donation has made it easier for me to do my job as a counselor, supporting all of our students' academic, social, and emotional development, promoting their mental health and overall well-being, and preparing them for future success.\r\n\r\nI have used books you donated in a number of capacities. One invaluable way that I used them last year was in my classroom counseling lessons. I deliver bi-weekly counseling lessons to all PK-2nd grade students at our school. The books you provided formed a core component of several lessons. For example, I used Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen in my PK and kinder lessons to explicitly teach students listening skills. Teaching listening skills to students is crucial, because it significantly impacts their academic success, social-emotional development, and overall well-being. Effective listening is essential for learning, communication, and building strong relationships, so it is important to teach this beginning at an early age. I read Who Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up to my first grade classes as part of a lesson on career development. Elementary school students benefit from learning about careers. It can broaden their horizons, spark their interest, increase motivation in school, and help them connect their learning to real-world applications, setting them up for future success. I used We Are All Wonders and The Empty Pot with my second graders, teaching them important character traits including integrity and non-judgement. This is important for supporting responsible citizenship and building positive relationships in our school community. I plan to continue using these wonderful books this year and in future years.\r\n\r\nIn addition to using the books in my classroom counseling lessons, I also incorporated them into my small groups and 1:1 counseling sessions. For example, I regularly read Angry Ninja and Just Now I Feel Angry to help students learn to identify and process their emotions in a healthy, positive manner, instead of blowing up and hurting themselves or others. These books equip children with coping strategies, emotional regulation skills, and problem-solving techniques to deal with anger constructively. Through relatable stories and engaging activities, they learn to identify triggers, express their feelings appropriately, and develop self-control. These are vital, lifelong skills.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your support. I have music playing when they enter the classroom, so they have heard Bob Marley's music and know his name and know a little about him from what I've told them (he briefly lived in my hometown with his mother), so they wanted to know more about him, so some of them have already read the book and made an illustration of him for the thank you card, but he was pretty much unfamiliar to them before they met me. Of course, many of the girls are familiar with Taylor Swift and her music, so they were excited when the book arrived (we had to discuss some conflict resolution as many wanted to check it out immediately, so it was a good learning experience for them).
