By incorporating everyday items such as LEGOs, plastic cups, and stencils into STEM activities, students were able to see how simple materials can be transformed into tools for innovation. These experiences not only sparked their curiosity but also gave them a sense of ownership in their learning process.\r\n\r\nThrough guided challenges and open-ended projects, students used LEGOs to build models of machines, structures, and even basic robotics. Plastic cups became tools for engineering towers and learning about balance and weight distribution, while stencils helped them design blueprints and explore geometry and symmetry. These materials, though common and easily accessible, encouraged students to think critically and experiment with different approaches to solve real-world problems.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these STEM experiences showed students that creativity doesn't require expensive or complicated tools—just imagination and a willingness to explore. They learned how to plan, test, and improve their ideas, discovering that innovation can come from the simplest objects around them. This approach has not only enhanced their understanding of science, technology, engineering, and math, but also empowered them to become confident creators and thinkers.","fullyFundedDate":1749689493478,"projectUrl":"project/shaping-strong-stem-students/9401104/","projectTitle":"Shaping Strong STEM Students","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Ellis","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8542112_orig.jpg?crop=2400,2400,x0,y304&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1658781075514","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8542112"},{"teacherId":5876118,"projectId":9258897,"letterContent":"I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for your generous donation of board games to my classroom. This helps them fully engage with reading, math, and learning programs in a way that wasn't possible before.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for my students is having their own set of headphones to use each day. They feel proud of this responsibility and love storing them in their personal bags. For many, this sense of ownership makes them more eager to participate and take care of their learning tools.\r\n\r\nI also see how this technology especially helps students who need extra support. Some who struggle with focusing are now able to stay on task much longer because the headphones block out distractions. Just last week, we brought them on a nature walk to study native plants. Students loved that they could stay hydrated without needing disposable plastic bottles, and they proudly carried them clipped to their backpacks. It was a perfect tie-in to our science lessons on sustainability and reducing waste.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue building on these lessons by creating a \"Green Habits Challenge,\" where students will track how often they use their reusable bottles and find other ways to cut down on single-use plastics. Each student has been assigned a plant bed, and the new tools have made it so much easier for them to dig, plant, and care for their seedlings. Just last week, I watched two students work together to plant marigolds, carefully using the trowels to loosen the soil without disturbing the roots. They were so proud of their teamwork that they asked me to take a picture to show their families.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to track the growth of our plants and record changes in plant height, leaf size, and flower buds.
