Students were immediately drawn to the new books, especially the engaging search-and-find activities and colorful illustrations. These books quickly became favorites among many of our younger readers, who were eager to explore every page and challenge themselves to spot hidden objects and details.\r\n\r\nThe new books support important learning skills in a fun and interactive way. Students are practicing observation, attention to detail, vocabulary development, critical thinking, and visual discrimination skills while reading. The books also encourage patience, focus, and problem-solving as students carefully search for items and clues throughout the pages. Because the activities feel like games, students stay highly engaged while strengthening important literacy and thinking skills.\r\n\r\nReading in the library has become even more interactive because of these books. Students often gather together to solve challenges, help one another search for hidden objects, and excitedly celebrate when they discover something new. These books have been especially popular with kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade students, who enjoy the hands-on and playful reading experience. Some students who are still building confidence with traditional texts are more willing to engage with books through these interactive activities.\r\n\r\nThanks to The DonorsChoose Community, I have been able to provide materials that make reading fun, welcoming, and accessible for a wide variety of learners. Our after-school garden club, open to the first 30 students from Kindergarten through 6th grade, has quickly become one of the most anticipated and transformative programs on campus. Students join not only to learn about gardening, but also to explore environmental stewardship, teamwork, and responsibility in a nurturing and supportive setting. This year, thanks to the generosity of a grant that funded essential supplies, our program has expanded into an exciting new pathway of leadership and skill-building for our oldest students. With your support, we hope to continue strengthening this program so that every child who wishes to participate can experience the pride and purpose that comes from growing something of their own.\r\n\r\nOne of the most powerful components of our garden club this year is the new 6th Grade Salsa Garden Mentorship Project. With the materials funded through our recent grant, our 6th graders were able to take full ownership of designing, preparing, planting, and maintaining a dedicated salsa garden bed. Under the guidance of their club sponsor—but fully driven by the students themselves—the 6th graders created a plan, gathered tools, and organized work sessions for the younger students. They modeled patience and leadership as they taught our K–5 gardeners how to pull weeds carefully, prepare soil, and plant key salsa ingredients such as cilantro, peppers, tomatoes, onions, and additional herbs and vegetables. Watching our older students step into the role of mentors has been a remarkable transformation; students who were once quiet now give instructions with confidence, and students who struggled with teamwork in the classroom have become collaborative, encouraging leaders in the garden. This real-world learning experience has not only deepened their understanding of plant science and environmental care, but has also given them the opportunity to practice communication, responsibility, and empathy—skills that will serve them long after elementary school.\r\n\r\nAs the garden grows, so does the community impact. Our students eagerly check on their plants each week, measuring progress, troubleshooting challenges, and celebrating each sprout and blossom. By the end of the school year, our hope is that their harvest will be abundant enough for the students to prepare fresh salsa during our community outreach program—an event that would allow families, teachers, and neighbors to taste the results of months of hard work and dedication. This project not only teaches students where their food comes from, but also fosters pride in contributing something meaningful to their community. With continued support and donations, we will be able to expand the number of students we serve, enhance our gardening spaces, and provide even more hands-on opportunities that connect environmental education with leadership, creativity, and healthy living. Your contribution ensures that our young gardeners—particularly those who may not otherwise have access to experiences like this—can continue to learn, grow, and thrive. Together, we can help our students protect the planet, one garden bed at a time.","fullyFundedDate":1750080820851,"projectUrl":"project/lets-protect-the-planet-with-gardening/9299908/","projectTitle":"Let's Protect the Planet with Gardening!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Selusi","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8548872_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1661242246392","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8548872"},{"teacherId":8643036,"projectId":9481452,"letterContent":"We would like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation for your generous donation of school supplies.
