A varied collection of books helps drum up initial excitement and sustain engagement among all students as they choose books and develop their Spanish language skills.\r\n You may wonder why reading is so important in my Spanish 1 classroom. Just as an acorn needs water and sunlight to first develop strong roots and then support a trunk and branches, to learn a language, students need input in the form of written and spoken language (water and sunlight), which helps them form connections between words and concepts (the roots), which give them the foundations they need to communicate. \r\n Comprehensible and engaging reading materials are a vital element of a language classroom. Studies have shown that reading is a more effective way to build vocabulary and pick up on grammar patterns than word lists and verb charts.
