Something so simple felt so special to them. They immediately wanted to use them, and from day one, the highlighters have completely changed the way they interact with text.\r\n\r\nWe've built a color-coded strategy: pink for people/who, green for setting/where/when, and yellow for what/how/why. This consistency has given my students the confidence to slow down, search for details, and make sense of the text in a deeper way.\r\n\r\nOne of our most powerful lessons so far was reading about the Irish Potato Famine while learning about historical texts and cause-and-effect structures. With highlighters in hand, students marked the people and places in pink and green, then used yellow to trace the causes and effects. It was incredible to watch them connect ideas visually—one student proudly explained how \"the famine led to people leaving Ireland\" while pointing directly to her highlighted evidence.\r\n\r\nAs we continue, students will keep using this strategy to strengthen both comprehension and writing. Our next step is turning their highlighted details into organized notes and evidence in their own words.\r\n\r\nYour generosity didn't just put highlighters in their hands—it gave them a tool to unlock deeper learning. Thank you for believing in them and in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1750773638670,"projectUrl":"project/bright-ideas-highlighters-for-deeper-re/9397757/","projectTitle":"Bright Ideas: Highlighters for Deeper Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lopez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10050473_orig.jpg?crop=1602,1602,x806,y1320&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1750367846737","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10050473"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_58317","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":870,"numTeachers":51,"percentFrplEligible":59,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":95,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"17.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":56.8,"schoolId":58317,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Charles W Harris Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Charles W Harris Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/arizona/cartwright-school-district-83/charles-w-harris-elementary-school/58317"}
