The Watson's Go to Birmingham provides such an experience. \r\n\r\nAs my students have the opportunity to explore this critical time in our country's history through this beloved fictional family, they are making connections to their history lessons and current events in such a meaningful way. Students are finding so much to discuss and analyze throughout this novel study because the characterization is so profound and it gives additional insight into what it was like to live during a time where racial segregation and hateful discrimination was the norm. \r\n\r\nMy students are facing difficult truths about our nation's history and having important conversations about the attitudes and fears that lead people to act in ways that are unjust, unfair and unkind. The magnetic and dry-erase boards allow children to practice letters, numbers, and word building with ease and independence. Because these tools are reusable and hands-on, students are able to practice more frequently and receive immediate feedback. This has led to noticeable improvements in writing stamina, fine-motor development, and task completion.\r\n\r\nThe interactive nature of the materials has made learning more exciting for our young learners. I was able to have each student use all materials so far that was donated. \r\nRight now, we are utilizing the couch and tent with our pillows for our phonics lessons. Since receiving our seating materials, my students have been extremely focused on their learning as they are always wanting to use their new pillows and couch.
