Most of our students are used to coding on a computer screen, so being able to build something with their hands and then use coding to make it move or respond was a whole new experience for them.\r\n\r\nWe started with the FriendBot lesson, where students worked in pairs to build and code their own FriendBots. I was surprised at how engaged they were throughout the lesson. What stood out to me the most was seeing how much they were actually learning. At first, I thought students were just following the instructions on the screen and putting in the code they were told to use. But as I walked around, I noticed students were changing their code, trying different inputs, and seeing what else they could get their FriendBots to do. Some were even figuring things out on their own without needing my help. That was probably the most rewarding part for me as a teacher because it showed me they were understanding what they were doing rather than just following directions.\r\n\r\nAnother part I enjoyed was watching students work together. They were sharing ideas, helping each other build, and figuring out why something wasn't working. At our school, we try to incorporate our Navajo teachings into everyday learning, especially K'é, which teaches us about relationships, respect, and helping one another. I could see that happening naturally as students worked with their partners. They had to listen to each other, be patient, and sometimes try several different ideas before getting their FriendBots to work the way they wanted.\r\n\r\nBeing a small school on the Navajo Nation, our students don't always have opportunities to experience technology like this. I think that's what made this project so exciting for them. They were able to take something they built themselves and bring it to life through coding. It also gave them a chance to see how coding, engineering, and problem-solving all work together.\r\n\r\nI'm thankful to our donors for giving our students this opportunity. It was great seeing their excitement when their FriendBots finally worked, but what I appreciated even more was watching them become curious enough to go beyond the lesson and try their own ideas. That's the kind of learning I enjoy seeing in my classroom, and I hope we can continue giving our students more experiences like this.","fullyFundedDate":1778006169699,"projectUrl":"project/raising-navajo-innovators/10048882/","projectTitle":"Raising Navajo Innovators","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Smiley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9576350_orig.jpg?crop=1736,1737,x0,y382&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1750962646221","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9576350"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_48377","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":400,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":100,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":25.0,"schoolId":48377,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Lukachukai Bia Community School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Lukachukai Bia Community School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/arizona/-bureau-of-indian-affairs-/lukachukai-bia-community-school/48377"}
