I have taught second grade for over 15 years and needed to update our classroom library to meet the needs of these students. They are so excited to have \"I Survived...\" chapter books and graphic novels. Some students have read some of these books or books like them and they are explaining to the students who haven't all about them and showing them what they like about them.\r\nWe use a curriculum that incorporates Daily Independent Reading for about 30 mins. In that time, students are continuing to practice finding books at their levels and reading for the sustained time. They get to start with 5 books each and every day they read independently at their desks with some quiet music. I only had a limited amount of chapter books for them to read and many were quiet old. The students feel proud to have new books to read and try.\r\nI am also grateful to have this time so I too can catch up on reading \"older\" student books. My class this year is full of ferocious readers and book lovers. I am looking forward to reading with them and being able to have rich discussions and lessons with these books.","fullyFundedDate":1746685191537,"projectUrl":"project/4th-grade-classroom-library/9312229/","projectTitle":"4th Grade Classroom Library","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hamilton","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2121855"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_39817","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":289,"numTeachers":26,"percentFrplEligible":58,"percentAsian":14,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":38,"percentIndigenous":34,"percentLatinx":1,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"11.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":56.9,"schoolId":39817,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Houghtaling Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Houghtaling Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/alaska/ketchikan-gateway-borough-school-district/houghtaling-elementary-school/39817"}
