Through our project, Knowing My Past, Helping Build My Future, students have been able to engage with meaningful texts such as I Am Enough, This Is Your Time, Call Us What We Carry, M Is for Melanin, and the Christopher Paul Curtis collection. These books have opened the door to important conversations about self-worth, resilience, history, and the contributions of African Americans throughout history.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom looks different for every student. As a self-contained special education classroom, we use a variety of instructional strategies to make literature accessible and engaging. Students participate in read-alouds, guided discussions, partner reading, listening activities, and independent exploration of books in our classroom library. These texts have helped strengthen reading comprehension, vocabulary development, critical thinking, and social-emotional learning while encouraging students to make personal connections to the stories and characters.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have been especially drawn to I Am Enough and M Is for Melanin because they see themselves reflected in the pages. Watching students become excited about reading and eager to discuss what they have learned has been one of the greatest outcomes of this project. Your support has not only placed books in their hands, but it has also helped build confidence, inspire curiosity, and foster a love of reading that will benefit them for years to come.
