Washington is witnessing the opposite: an upward trend. Thanks to your support for Amplifying Creative Voices: Digital, Analog Tools for Young Storytellers, I am pleased to report on the impact of your investment so far.\r\n\r\nScholars in grades 9-12 are using the Canon DSLR camera and audio recorder to produce the first edition of The Washingtonian, our student-led magazine. This is what we do. We put real tools in students' hands and let them practice the traits needed for success in any career. Good listening skills. Planning and organizing. Managing time. Appreciating good writing. Being inquisitive about the world and the people in it. Researching the unknown.\r\n\r\nHere is how the equipment ties to the 4 C's of college and career readiness:\r\n\r\nCritical thinking: Scholars decide which image, which quote, and which story earns a place on the page.\r\nCommunication: Behind the lens and the microphone, they learn to interview, listen, and tell a story with both sound and sight.\r\nCollaboration: Writers, photographers, and editors work as a newsroom team to meet deadlines together.\r\nCreativity: The mix of digital and analog tools gives every scholar, whatever their comfort level, a way into the story.\r\n\r\nThe camera and recorder also support our emphasis on non-fiction and informational text -- concepts that are prominent in current events and that matter for reading comprehension and ACT performance. Scholars research, conduct interviews, and present their findings. With that being said, the greater reward is the ownership and pride they take in seeing their names, photographs, and words in print. I have watched confidence grow in reading, research, and presentation, and that confidence follows them into college applications and careers.\r\n\r\nBecause the mass media field is ever-changing, our scholars are also building a social media presence for The Washingtonian and for Graphophobia, our literary journal. Area media professionals visit as \"guest\" teachers, and the program continues to team-teach with other academic disciplines. Your gift has opened these doors wider.\r\n\r\nThis is only the first edition. The equipment will serve every issue and every class that follows.
