Through the donated biographies of Frederick Douglass, students strengthened their comprehension, learned to analyze nonfiction text, and developed a deeper understanding of key themes such as resilience, freedom, and justice. In our classroom, reading is interactive and student-centered. Students read closely, annotate important ideas, and participate in group discussions where they connect Douglass's experiences to broader themes in American history.\r\n\r\nTo deepen their understanding, students completed a class graphic organizer to track key events, ideas, and character development throughout Frederick Douglass's life. This helped them organize their thinking and make connections between different parts of the text. Students then used their organizers to write a structured essay, demonstrating their understanding of Douglass's journey and the impact of his contributions. These activities supported both reading comprehension and writing development in a meaningful way.\r\n\r\nThese texts have also helped students build empathy and critical thinking skills. Many students were surprised and inspired by Frederick Douglass's journey from enslavement to becoming a powerful voice for abolition and equality. Students who typically struggle with reading were especially engaged because the biography format made history feel personal and accessible. Overall, this project increased engagement, strengthened literacy skills, and helped students see history as powerful human stories that still connect to their lives today.","fullyFundedDate":1765483376770,"projectUrl":"project/from-chains-to-change-learning-through/9572330/","projectTitle":"From Chains to Change: Learning Through Frederick Douglass","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Wiggins","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4036396_orig.jpg?crop=511,511,x0,y30&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1689689920867","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4036396"},{"teacherId":4043609,"projectId":9783816,"letterContent":"Thank you for your support of my classroom and my students. Whether it's through calming tools, quiet reflection, or guided strategies, they are learning how to manage their emotions in a healthy and productive way. While many donors are familiar with technology at home, using it intentionally in a classroom setting looks a little different. The LED light strip helps set the tone for learning by allowing me to adjust lighting for instruction, small group work, or independent practice. Softer lighting helps students stay focused and reduces anxiety, while brighter lighting supports active learning and collaboration. The color wall clock supports time management and structure by helping students visually track transitions, work time, and breaks, which is especially helpful for students who need clear routines.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most is how these tools make the classroom feel inviting and motivating. The JBL music speaker has quickly become a favorite because it allows us to play instrumental music during independent work, calming sounds during testing, or upbeat music during transitions. Students often tell me the music helps them concentrate and feel relaxed while working through challenging math problems. The sound quality is clear and balanced, filling the room without being distracting.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have especially connected with this new technology, particularly those who struggle with focus or sensory regulation. Students who previously had difficulty staying on task are now more engaged and settled during lessons. Others feel more confident knowing they can visually track time and rely on consistent cues throughout the day. With these books in hand, students practiced essential literacy skills, analyzing primary sources, evaluating historical context, and comparing narratives across time. Most importantly, they learned how to navigate emotionally complex material with maturity and curiosity. This project expanded not only their knowledge of American history but also their capacity to ask thoughtful questions about justice, resilience, and memory.\r\n Reading in our classroom has taken on a new energy. Students work collaboratively, annotating passages, discussing the layers of meaning in the survivor's testimony, and examining how firsthand accounts shape our understanding of the past. The room often hums with conversation, some students debating the author's choices, others tracing connections to modern social issues. These discussions have become some of the most powerful moments of our year.\r\n Several students who rarely speak up during reading activities have connected deeply with this text. One student who previously struggled to engage with nonfiction now comes in eager to share a new insight or question.
