Then when I introduced the wobble chairs and the cushion rounds, they became more eager to get to independent work because they knew they had a new fun choice to make as they worked. Some students used to groan as they left the rug and moved to independent work, and I have not heard that since introducing the wobble chairs and cushion rounds! The kids are more excited to go back to their seats and do their work, while being able to wobble and wriggle and rock while they work. \r\n\r\nSome of the kids have shown a vast improvement in their independent work times, improving in both accuracy and efficiency. I truly believe it's because they are more comfortable! The wobble chairs also allow for the more neurodivergent kids to move as needed. This helps them focus more on the task at hand. \r\n\r\nMost of our desk to rug transitions have drastically improved in speed, so there is far less instructional time wasted with kids trying to \"find\" or locate a difficult to remember line \"spot\" on a generic rug. Now that they are all assigned a specific letter (or heart) to sit on during whole group instruction, they can come to and from the rug with far more ease. For our \"Morning Meeting\" time they are still allowed free choice to sit in any perimeter letter (or heart) so we are all facing inward and sharing respectfully while being able to see one another. The rug has made our daily meeting times easier to manage because the kids are still more spread out than our old/smaller rug. It allows them space to fidget or bounce a little, since they aren't touching anybody else. \r\n\r\nThis is my tenth year of teaching, and the room is more beautiful and welcoming than ever. As the teacher, I know my mood and attitude have a big impact on the kids, and this rug makes me happy! Every day I walk in the room, turn on the lights, and smile in delight. Thank you so very much for helping our class enjoy our days together, and embrace our individual space and independent work times.
