Many of them had never seen building kits like these before, and the moment I opened the boxes, they eagerly reached for the colorful pieces, chattering in both English and their home languages about what they wanted to build first. Their smiles and laughter said it all, this was learning that felt like play!\r\n\r\nWe began by working on a class challenge: building different types of levers. Students collaborated in small groups, following the picture instructions, testing out ideas, and adjusting their designs when something didn't work the first time. It was amazing to watch them use academic vocabulary like force, weight, balance, and pivot while also practicing teamwork and communication skills in English. One student proudly exclaimed, \"It works!\" after his group successfully built a seesaw model, and the whole group clapped for themselves.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, my ESL students are not only learning science and engineering concepts, but also gaining confidence using English in meaningful, hands-on ways. These kits give them the chance to problem-solve, negotiate, and celebrate successes together.\r\n\r\nNext, we will be exploring pulleys and gears, using the kits to connect our science lessons on motion and energy to real-world examples. The students are already brainstorming what machines they use at home and in their community that might use these systems. Many students immediately gravitated toward stories of kids their age making a difference, while others were drawn to nonfiction texts that taught them about recycling, protecting animals, and clean energy. Your support didn't just put books on our shelves, it gave my students the tools to imagine themselves as problem-solvers and advocates for our planet's future.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, our classroom library is now a place where students can discover how small actions can lead to big change. Having a reliable classroom printer has allowed me to quickly provide differentiated materials for students at different proficiency levels. Instead of waiting in line at a shared school copier, I can now print on the spot during a lesson, making learning more immediate and responsive to students' needs.\r\n\r\nThe students' favorite part of our new classroom setup is their very own portfolio folders! Each student now has a labeled basket and file folder where they store their writing, vocabulary lists, and reading logs. Seeing their work printed and organized makes them feel proud and confident, especially when we take time each week to reflect on how much they've grown.\r\n\r\nThank you again for believing in the potential of our students and investing in their education. Their faces lit with excitement as they realized they could build working circuits with real switches, lights, and sounds, all on their own. For many of my multilingual learners, this hands-on experience leveled the playing field and allowed them to shine through exploration rather than language.\r\n\r\nWe recently completed a classroom project where students worked in small groups to design a \"light-up communication board\" that mimicked how emergency signals work, using circuits to send messages without words. One group even wired a circuit that buzzed when the \"wrong\" button was pressed, simulating a safety alert! This gave them an authentic way to practice science vocabulary like conductor, current, open/closed circuit, and resistor in both English and Spanish.\r\n\r\nThe next step? We're starting a unit on renewable energy, and students will soon explore how solar panels can power circuits. These kits will help them test and compare energy sources in real time.
