They loved our introduction to the tambourines and scarves. Each week they are eager to move it and groove it with their instruments. We are learning about rhythm and beats. Students use the sounds and movements to segment multi-syllabic words, CVC words, and spell out sight words. Students had the opportunity to participate in teacher-led choral readings and collaborative discussions with peers. In addition to reading the text students learned about the specific methods Eric Carle utilizes to illustrate his works. Students even completed our book club project by creating their very own Eric Carle illustrations. \r\nIn our classroom, reading is in the early literacy stages. There is a lot of teacher modeling and constant exposure to a variety of texts across multiple genres. Students are learning how to hold books, turn pages, track print, and even locate words they know by sight or are able to decode. Students are mostly reading for enjoyment as we are learning how to read every day. \r\nI can honestly say every single one of my students enjoyed the book. They love having their own copies and writing their names in them. Each time we finish a book club project, students take their books home to keep and add to their very own collection. We currently are learning all about the needs of living things. Our Winter garden has already started sprouting. We used the additional gloves to protect our hands while preparing our next garden bed. Students were ecstatic to plant the next round of seeds and are awaiting their sprouts above the soil. My students were overjoyed when they saw we had received a package. They could not wait for me to put the wheelbarrow together, especially when they realized it was just their size! We will continue to utilize these materials you have so graciously helped provide for us. These texts allowed students the opportunity for every child to have the resources in their hands and take home to share with their families. Students followed along and practiced tracking text. Students were able to practice choral reading during whole group read aloud and even had a chance to partner for collaborative discussions of the text. \r\nOne of their favorite activities is sharing their favorite parts and retelling the story. They demonstrated further understanding of story elements and wrapped up the week with a craft to further explore characters in the story and sequencing the story. Each child wrote his or her name in the book and were eager to take their books home to keep and continue enjoying time and time again. Each month we have a Kids in the Kitchen activity and this past month we made personal apple pies. Students love having enough supplies to work independently on their recipes. They are learning to share and take turns and because of resources provided by you, my students are able to do this effectively. \r\nWhen my students first saw the materials they were eager to add them to our kitchen cart. They had ideas for how to use each one, as well. My students look forward to cooking each month and these materials add to their excitement. We will continue to add items to our kitchen as the year goes on. We explored the text and the illustrations throughout the week. We had collaborative discussions concerning the relationships between the illustrations and the text. We rated the story as one of our favorites and finished the week with a Leaf Man craft made from leaves students collected with their families. \r\nStudents loved being able to take their books home to keep and share with their families. They have already shared with me how they are continuing to reread their books and discuss various aspects of the story.
