Over the past week, students have worked to research multiple topics, played fun games, and engaged in many deep conversations about their own perspectives on debate topics. We explored historical topics, such as the atomic bombs dropped on Japan during World War II and ethical questions concerning Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts. Students also were able to engage in our community by talking with local public defenders and a local politician about the use of debate in their respective fields. They also conducted a semi-formal debate on the effectiveness of our nation's prison system. \r\n\r\nIt has been a true treasure to see this community come together to support our students. The work and effort that went into this debate workshop will have a lasting impact on not only the students who attended the workshop, but the school community as a whole. The materials brought to the school with this project are already being utilized in other Social Studies classrooms.
