They have been very excited to play with all of the new equipment, especially the soccer goals and nets. They love playing soccer, and having the nets has really made their playtime extra fun.\r\n\r\nThey also love the new balls and the catching set. These are new items that we did not have before, and my students have really enjoyed playing with them during recess, lunch, and P.E.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw all of the new equipment, they were super excited and could not wait to use it. They wanted to try everything and were so excited to go outside and play. They were very thankful for all of the new items.\r\n\r\nThe next step for my class is to set up a class outdoor game using the soccer nets. I also plan to give the class an extra recess once a month as a reward for their hard work. During this extra recess, I plan to set up stations outside using all of the new equipment so my students have a variety of fun activities to choose from. Having a larger collection of Spanish books gives my students more opportunities to read, learn, and build confidence in the language they use to communicate with their families and communities.\r\n\r\nThese new texts allow us to practice important reading skills such as identifying the main idea and key details, making inferences, describing characters, learning new vocabulary, comparing and contrasting texts, and using evidence to support our thinking. Students are also learning that reading is not just something we do in English. Spanish is a language for reading, learning, imagining, and exploring new ideas too.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom looks different throughout the day. Students read independently, with partners, and together as a class. We talk about what we notice, ask questions, make predictions, and connect stories to our own experiences. The Spanish books have been especially valuable because they allow students to practice these skills without language being a barrier to showing what they know.\r\n\r\nI have been especially excited to see students who are more comfortable in Spanish gravitate toward these books and become eager to share what they are reading with their classmates. Some students who may be hesitant to participate during English reading activities are much more confident when they can discuss a story in Spanish. At the same time, my English-dominant students benefit from having opportunities to strengthen their Spanish and appreciate the language and cultures represented in our classroom.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these books have helped create a classroom library where my students can see their language and experiences represented. They are not simply learning to read. They are developing a sense of pride in being bilingual and discovering that there is a whole world of stories waiting for them in both of their languages.
