Through this process, they explored how light reflection, heat, clarity, and elemental composition shape the physical properties of minerals. It was thrilling to see their discoveries come full circle as they worked on lapidary machines to shape and polish real gemstones. Another unforgettable moment was during our flame tests. Students were captivated by the vibrant colors produced by burning different metal salts, a perfect demonstration of how elements influence the colors of the jewelry pieces they created. They eagerly researched the periodic table to connect these colors to the chemical composition of their gems, bringing both art and science to life in our classroom.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students, this project marked their first hands-on lab experience. Some shared that this was what they always imagined science to be—full of discovery and excitement—rather than just worksheets. Watching their faces light up as they engaged with flames, colors, and minerals was priceless. The artwork the students created helped showcase their understanding of the five central ideas of the novel, which then allowed them to write deeper analytical essays on the themes of the novel. \r\n\r\nThe class's learning was made ten times better simply because we had the materials to create rather than just write an essay.
