Many described learning about themes such as fairness, identity, struggle, and empathy through their literature circle books, showing how deeply these texts shaped their thinking. Several noted that the books introduced them to new vocabulary and new ideas, including concepts like bias and scapegoating, while others were struck by stories involving immigration, friendship, or emotional resilience. Their reflections reveal that authentic, age-appropriate novels give them the space to explore the questions and experiences that matter most to them—both as readers and as growing adolescents.\r\n\r\nStudents also shared how reading in class helped them understand themselves as learners. Some described building stamina and confidence, while others recognized the strategies and environments that help them stay focused. Many enjoyed the opportunity to read with peers, talk through complex ideas, and hear perspectives different from their own. These small-group conversations not only strengthened comprehension but also created moments of connection that traditional reading structures don't always provide. Even when students struggled—with focus, with the packet, or with challenging sections of the book—they voiced a clear desire for stories that spark discussion, curiosity, and deeper thinking.\r\n\r\nOverall, the reflections show that this project has a powerful impact on students' personal and academic growth. They valued the chance to explore meaningful themes, collaborate with classmates, and reflect on their own reactions to the text. By engaging with literature that feels authentic to their lives, students are not only improving as readers but also developing empathy, self-awareness, and stronger social-emotional skills. With continued access to high-quality, diverse novels, my students can keep building the habits, insights, and confidence that will stay with them well beyond this unit—long after the final page is turned.","fullyFundedDate":1751565360731,"projectUrl":"project/circles-of-understanding-lit-circles-fo/9432366/","projectTitle":"Circles of Understanding: Lit Circles for Empathy and Growth","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Czerwiec","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7541581_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x846,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1750855630522","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7541581"},{"teacherId":8117838,"projectId":9700442,"letterContent":"Thank you for helping our students find joy in the library. This year, I taught hands-only CPR to all of my sixth through eighth-grade students by using the manikins I received through this grant. My students enjoy hands-on learning experiences and gain the self-confidence of knowing how to save lives. \r\n\r\nI have over 330 students whom I see in a five-week rotation, and by receiving these manikins, all of the students have been able to learn. Every time a new group arrives in my class and sees the manikins on the tables and floor, they are so excited, asking over and over if they will be able to use them. I also purchased a training automatic external defibrillator (AED) to show the students how it works. \r\n\r\nBefore receiving this grant, I borrowed an older manikin from a friend, and students had to watch me show them how to give chest compressions.
