They also help students learn to make predictions, ask and answer questions about the text, and connect stories to their own experiences. Many of the books support social-emotional learning, too—teaching lessons about friendship, kindness, perseverance, and understanding feelings in age-appropriate ways\r\nIn our first-grade classroom, reading is joyful and interactive! \r\nWe read together as a class during read-alouds, in small guided reading groups, and independently during quiet reading time. Students use picture clues and beginning phonics skills to decode words and build fluency. We talk about what we read, draw or write about it, and even act out parts of the stories. There's a strong focus on helping students fall in love with reading and feel confident as young readers.\r\nSeveral students have shown a new excitement for reading because of the new books. One student who loves animals was thrilled to read a nonfiction book about ocean creatures and proudly shared new facts with the class. Another student, who's been building confidence in reading, lit up when we read a book with a character that reminded them of themselves—it gave them a sense of pride and connection.
