Your donation made it possible for each student to get their own copy of a book, an entire \"detective kit\", and do a related craft. \r\n\r\nThis year we tried something new: nonfiction. Specifically, narrative non-fiction about a true crime: the Mona Lisa being stolen in 1911. It also had a great tie-in to the recent heist at the Louvre. Students would read ~50 pages on their own at home (either by reading the physical book or listening to the audiobook), and we would come together each week to discuss the questions. We put on detective hats and tried to write clues about our thief in our detective notebook to see if we could narrow it down before we found out the answer. We added real pictures of the suspects, key detectives and museum staff, and crime scenes. \r\n\r\nOverall, this book was the most divisive book club book picked so far. It had the biggest range of ratings, with a few as low as 2 out of 5 stars! But students were engaged. Students were exposed to a new type of novel they may have never picked up their own. And students were exposed to a history they may not have heard of otherwise. \r\n\r\nAt the end of our book club, students got to create their own masterpieces on shrinky dink paper. They were also given wooden frames to \"frame\" their artwork. None of this would have been possible without your support.","fullyFundedDate":1765336485357,"projectUrl":"project/book-club-the-mona-lisa-files/9943655/","projectTitle":"Book Club: The Mona Lisa Files","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Clinton","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8820232_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1692533629742","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8820232"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_30505","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":416,"numTeachers":29,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":39,"percentWhite":32,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":14,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":82.3,"schoolId":30505,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Westview Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Westview Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/champaign-unit-4-school-district/westview-elementary-school/30505"}
