Through these texts, students are learning how to analyze characters, identify themes, make inferences, use evidence from the text to support their thinking, and discuss how characters grow and change throughout a story. Just as importantly, the books have opened the door to conversations about friendship, identity, acceptance, perseverance, and what it means to belong.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an active and collaborative experience. Students read independently and together, stop to discuss important moments, share their thinking with classmates, and use evidence from the text to explain their ideas. I love seeing a book become something we experience as a classroom community rather than simply another assignment to complete.\r\n\r\nOne of the greatest impacts has been seeing students who may not always consider themselves readers become invested in the characters and stories. Graphic novels like New Kid immediately draw students in, while books like The Superteacher Project give students characters and situations that lead to meaningful conversations and connections. Students talk about the books with one another, make predictions about what will happen next, and are genuinely excited to continue reading.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping me create a classroom where students have access to books that challenge them academically while also helping them see themselves and others in new ways. Your generosity has helped us grow not only as readers, but as a community of learners.","fullyFundedDate":1773864532048,"projectUrl":"project/growing-readers-through-stories-of-belon/10151246/","projectTitle":"Growing Readers Through Stories of Belonging","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Burgos","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3190664_orig.jpg?crop=640,640,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723735843005","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/lburgos"},{"teacherId":3190664,"projectId":10127447,"letterContent":"These books have had a wonderful impact on my students and have helped us continue building a classroom community centered around a shared love of reading. Having class sets means that every student can participate in the same reading experience, regardless of whether they have access to books outside of school.\r\n\r\nThrough these novels, my students have strengthened skills such as character analysis, identifying themes, comparing different perspectives, making inferences, and supporting their ideas with evidence from the text. The stories have also given us opportunities to explore bigger ideas such as identity, perseverance, friendship, labels, family, and belonging. These conversations often become some of our most meaningful moments because students are able to connect what happens to the characters with their own experiences and the world around them.\r\n\r\nReading together is an important part of our classroom. We stop throughout a novel to make predictions, discuss characters' choices, ask questions, and share our thinking. Students also respond to what they read through writing and small- and whole-group discussions. Having enough copies for everyone has allowed students to interact directly with the text and participate fully in these lessons.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things has been watching students become invested in the stories and characters. My students already loved reading Gordon Korman together, so being able to continue that experience with Supergifted has been especially exciting. At the same time, Because of Mr. Terupt and The House That Lou Built have introduced them to new characters, perspectives, and experiences. Seeing students recommend the books to one another, talk about characters outside of our reading time, and get excited when it is time to continue a story reminds me why access to engaging books matters so much.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students books that help them grow as readers while also helping them better understand themselves and one another.","fullyFundedDate":1772725859011,"projectUrl":"project/books-that-help-every-student-find-their/10127447/","projectTitle":"Books That Help Every Student Find Their Place","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Burgos","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3190664_orig.jpg?crop=640,640,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723735843005","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/lburgos"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_4340","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":101,"numTeachers":8,"percentFrplEligible":74,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":31,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":65,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"2 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"12.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":83.8,"schoolId":4340,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about West Marin Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"West Marin Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/shoreline-unified-school-district/west-marin-elementary-school/4340"}
