Your generosity has made such an impact on our class! As I made the move from teaching 2nd grade in Massachusetts to 3rd grade in Tennessee, I wanted to create a space where my students felt excited to read the moment they walked in. Because of your generosity, we now have a cozy reading area filled with chapter books that students actually want to pick up. Our Dog Man books are the biggest hit, that bin is almost always empty, and there's usually a little waiting list of eager readers ready for their turn!\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, we balance \"have-to reading\" (our curriculum) with daily \"fun reading,\" giving students the freedom to choose any book that interests them, no matter their level. I use my classroom Pick Sticks to select students to use the cushions you provided our classroom with- students sit crisscross applesauce and silently read. \r\n\r\nThat freedom has been powerful; it's sparked imagination, built curiosity, and helped students see reading as something they enjoy, not just something they have to do. I've already seen growth in their fluency and comprehension, but even more meaningful is their excitement. They're talking about books, recommending them to friends, and choosing to read whenever they get the chance. Thank you for helping me create a classroom full of joyful, motivated readers!","fullyFundedDate":1753672211362,"projectUrl":"project/building-a-love-of-reading-one-chapter/9422117/","projectTitle":"Building a Love of Reading, One Chapter at a Time","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Proulx","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10001568_orig.jpg?crop=1242,1242,x0,y140&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744899632947","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10001568"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_92846","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":348,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":72,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":26,"percentWhite":33,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":28,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"13.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":59.8,"schoolId":92846,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about West Haven Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"West Haven Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/tennessee/knox-county-schools/west-haven-elementary-school/92846"}
