I am so appreciative of the generosity and how this has already shown an impact to my students! As books started to arrive I let my students know that we were getting a few new books as gifts and why I wanted them. The excitement and curiosity was evident as soon as books started to arrive. When I opened a package containing \"A Gift for Amma\" one of my students, born in India, immediately noticed it and yelled out \"is that book about India can we please please read it today!!??\" and I knew that is exactly why I needed books with more representation in our room. We did in fact read the book that day and I had multiple students in the room who were able to speak on their time in India, how it was similar or different from the book, and how it is different from their experience in the U.S. Other peers had questions for them and they were able to learn from their peers' experiences. \r\n\r\nAfter this, I have left the books out for students to read whenever they have free time or are working on independent or partner reading. I have seen so many new pairings of students getting together to read these new texts and explore parts of the world and people's experiences they hadn't thought of before. Conversation about winter holidays have shifted away from just Christmas and have explored Diwali, Ramadan, and Hanukkah with first hand experiences from our students and what these holidays mean for them and their families. \r\n\r\nI am excited to continue sharing these texts with my students, and I know one student in particular is very excited to share \"Zahra's Blessing: A Book about Ramadan\" and his family traditions surrounding the holiday when the time comes.","fullyFundedDate":1732900907298,"projectUrl":"project/connectedness-through-texts/8930170/","projectTitle":"Connectedness Through Texts","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Crugnale","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9830635"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_60549","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":605,"numTeachers":47,"percentFrplEligible":15,"percentAsian":16,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":64,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"12.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":71.4,"schoolId":60549,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about West Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"West Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/massachusetts/andover-public-school-district/west-elementary-school/60549"}
