In our 2nd grade classroom, I really value choice. In almost everything that we do, there are choices for students - whether it be choices regarding activities, seating, tools, or more.
I believe that providing choice makes students take more pride in their learning because they can own it based on their preference and how they learn or work best.
We have 2 flexible seating options that are constantly being used and desired. If I could have a few more options, this would give students even more freedom to personalize their learning. Second graders are also very wiggly and I have found that the flexible seats that we do use multiple times every day are a great way to help students maintain the focus that they need in order to succeed.
The students in my class are also working on understanding personal space on the rug. I find that reminding certain students about this has become a regular occurrence. Not only is the carpet visually appealing with the bright colors, but it has a grid that is so helpful for students to see how much personal space they should have, and how much they should be giving others. We spend a lot of time community building on the rug and I think that this would be a huge help during those important times.
I appreciate any help I can get to support the needs of my students - I truly think that these items will make a drastic and positive difference in my classroom!
