Because of your generosity, my sixth-grade students were able to experience a powerful story about identity, family, and the experiences that shape who we become.\r\nAs students read Jacqueline Woodson's memoir in verse, they explored themes of belonging, memory, and the importance of our roots. The book encouraged students to reflect on their own lives and consider how family, community, and personal experiences influence their identities.\r\nAs a culminating activity, students wrote \"I Am\" poems that allowed them to share their own stories, hopes, and experiences. Through these poems, students recognized that we are all rooted in where we come from and that we continue to grow through the love, support, and experiences that surround us.\r\nThis project created meaningful opportunities for students to connect literature to their own lives while building empathy and understanding for the experiences of others. Many students found confidence in sharing their voices and discovered that their stories matter.\r\nThank you for helping provide experiences that encourage self-reflection, creativity, and connection. Your support helped our students see that, like the author, their own voices and stories are important and worthy of being shared.","fullyFundedDate":1751039581119,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-voices-bringing-brown-girl-d/9385648/","projectTitle":"Empowering Voices: Bringing Brown Girl Dreaming to Sixth Grade Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Seckman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2985801_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1473125444749","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/n-cottle"},{"teacherId":2985801,"projectId":9617529,"letterContent":"Thank you for supporting our Upstander Project. They then extended their learning by researching other historical and modern-day upstanders who chose to make a difference in the lives of others.\r\nUsing the materials you provided, students created picture frame projects that honored these individuals and highlighted the importance of courage, compassion, and standing up for what is right. This project encouraged students to think critically about their own choices and the impact one person can have on the world.\r\nThank you for helping bring these important lessons to life. Because of your generosity, my sixth-grade students have been able to experience the power of stories through our monthly picture book read-alouds.\r\nAlthough my students are in middle school, picture books continue to provide meaningful opportunities for discussion, reflection, and connection. The books you helped provide have allowed us to explore important themes such as kindness, perseverance, identity, empathy, courage, and acceptance.\r\nEach month, students gather together to listen to and discuss a new story. These read-aloud experiences have sparked thoughtful conversations, encouraged students to make personal connections, and helped build a classroom community centered on understanding and respect.
