The library collection had a handful of graphic novels, hardly any books about strong women, and none of the newer exciting series that are on the shelves in public libraries and stores. From the Wings of Fire series to a huge variety of Rick Riordan books, my students are being introduced to so many new series. I'm happy to report that the new series are not the only ones being read, A Series of Unfortunate Events and Nancy Drew are a small example of books that my students have started and completed.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for your generosity. Since starting as the library assistant at this school, I have been able to grow a super impressive graphic novel sections for my students. Not just the older students, but I've found some adorable graphic novels for my early readers. Study after study shows that reading graphic novels is not a detriment to a students learning. The vocabulary that is used in graphic novels is very advanced. My students love graphic novels and I'm happy they now have a wider variety to choose from.\r\n\r\nIn addition to increasing our graphic novel section, your donor's choose contribution has gone a long way in introduce amazing women in history to my students. One of the keyways we are using the resources is through sensory breaks and interactive games that integrate speech-language goals. For example, I recently facilitated a session where students used tactile sensory objects—such as textured balls and fidget items—to help with focus and self-regulation before engaging in more challenging language tasks. After using the sensory materials, the students seemed more centered and able to better concentrate on their speech activities.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new sensory tools and games, their faces lit up with excitement and curiosity. Many of them were immediately drawn to the colorful, textured objects and the interactive games. For some students, the tactile aspect of the materials was particularly engaging, as it provided a unique way for them to connect with abstract language concepts. This activity not only helped reinforce scientific concepts like properties of materials but also provided an opportunity for students to practice their expressive language skills, from labeling and categorizing to forming complete sentences.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, their reactions were filled with excitement and curiosity. Their eyes lit up as they eagerly opened the colorful kits, eager to explore the contents. Some students were initially hesitant due to the unfamiliar texture of the slime, but once they touched it, their reluctance quickly faded. They were fascinated by how the slime could stretch and bounce in their hands. This tactile experience created an immediate sense of calm for some students, while others found it to be a fun and interactive way to bond with their peers. The books from this project helped continue the Rick Riordan journey of Percy Jackson which my students have been zooming through. \r\n\r\nI have been asked on several occasions for manga books and unfortunately many of them are not appropriate for elementary level students. I was pleased to find several series that would work for my students.
