It teaches us compassion and how unjust the world can unfortunately be. A lesson I like to teach with this book involves envelopes with different topics on them. Some include family, humor, feminism, refuting prejudice and lessons learned. I have students search the chapters we've read for exact quotes from the book that they feel fit these specific topics, then present them to the class, explaining how their quote fits the topic. I feel like this is a worthwhile way for students to understand the important themes I want them to grasp from reading this book, without me telling them exactly what they should gather from certain scenes. \r\n\r\nFor most of the novel, we read it together in class. Sometimes students were given a partner and read in the hallways for certain chapters (we do a lot of hallway work in my school) and had to come up with some questions from the chapter or answer a few from a brown bag. We pause at certain points in the novel and I may ask questions about what we just read. I teach them about the motif of \"It's not time to worry yet\" that runs throughout the book. As a closing activity, all 105 students had an individual choice. They could take a test that covered the whole book, draw a scene, write a poem, or create and perform a song for the class. With the scenes and poem, students have to draw 3 symbols and explain with page numbers what that object represents in the book. We are wrapping up the novel this week and will have class presentations for all the projects. I can't wait to see what they create. \r\n\r\nThank you again for your donation to make this novel happen again for these students and another 110 next year. Reading this novel has become a rite of passage in our school, as it's been done for over 15 years consecutively.","fullyFundedDate":1768252506837,"projectUrl":"project/mockingbirds-rise-above/9829226/","projectTitle":"Mockingbirds Rise Above","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Krochta","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6316152"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_94296","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":485,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":32,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":18,"percentWhite":57,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":16,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"19.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":75.3,"schoolId":94296,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Wayne School of Engineering on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Wayne School of Engineering","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/wayne-county-public-schools/wayne-school-of-engineering/94296"}
